Suspicious package at Federal Courthouse

UPDATE: A little after 11 a.m. today, Bomb and Arson personnel determined the package contains no explosives.

FROM THE FBI: A Deputy U.S. Marshal found the soft-sided, mesh, blue cooler outside the Courthouse's east garage door at about 8:25 a.m. A tag on the package indicated it would explode. The courthouse and several adjacent buildings were evacuated. An anonymous call was received at the Courthouse at 10 a.m. warning of additional explosive devices in the Courthouse. The interior of the building has been searched and cleared. The FBI has taken over the investigation, which is continuing.

Officers were called today at 8:44 a.m. to the Federal Courthouse located at 9th and Locust to investigate a suspicious package. The package, a soft-side cooler, was located near a garage door on the east side of the building. The cooler had a note indicating the contents of the cooler would explode. The Federal Courthouse was evacuated as a precaution, and the KCPD Bomb and Arson detectives were called in to examine the package. The bomb robot is going to evaluate the package before a determination is made on how to proceed.

An extensive perimeter around the Courthouse has been established prohibiting pedestrian and vehicle traffic around the building. It is unknown how long it will take for the investigation, and roads will remain closed until the investigation concludes.
